How it works

Your words.
A useful next step.

Pocketsay is the Android app. Proto is the assistant you talk to. Follow an everyday request, then explore what happens behind it.

A small product tour

Try a small moment.

Working in the app

Hear what matters.

Selected notifications, read aloud. Questions use your chosen model provider.

What the real app needs

Selected notifications become encrypted memory on your phone. Questions and saved context go to your chosen model provider; a broad question can include recent saved items.

“Hey Proto, what did I miss?”

Sample catch-up

A friend asks what time you’re coming. Ravi says he’ll call after lunch. Priya asked to move the meeting to 4.

In the app, the newest five saved items come first. This example shows three fictional messages.

Context heard. Your day continues.
Working in the app

A draft. Your decision.

Approve or leave it unsent. Your phone needs to be unlocked to send.

What the real app needs

In the app, Proto reads a draft back and waits for approval. Sending through another app needs your phone unlocked and Phone control enabled. The buttons here only demonstrate that choice.

The draft waits for your approval. No message is sent from this website.

Beta in the app

You watch. You can stop.

Beta tasks can act without approval at each step. Watch them as they run.

What the real app needs

Beta phone tasks use screen text and your model provider to choose steps. Safeguards are designed to avoid sensitive fields and stop before payment, but depend on screen labels. Watch each step; complete purchases yourself.

This is a scripted walkthrough. No app is opened and no provider is contacted.

Catch up without looking.

Say “Hey Proto” and ask about selected notifications. Wake detection is local; your question and saved context use your chosen model provider. Android speech recognition may process audio online.

How this works
Behind the moment / Your question

Catch up without looking.

A detector on your phone listens for one phrase, "Hey Proto". It runs on the phone, needs no account, and sends no audio to the cloud. It works with the screen off. If Proto is talking, saying "Hey Proto" again stops it so you can speak.

Then ask in your own words. "What did I miss?" "What WhatsApp messages did I get?" "What emails did I get today?" Android's speech service turns your voice into text and may process audio online; Pocketsay doesn't keep the audio. It searches its encrypted database on your phone and picks saved message context. That context, with your question, goes to the model provider you chose, Groq or Google Gemini, using your own API key. The provider's own terms apply to what it receives.

Answers come newest first, five at a time. Then Proto asks, "Shall I go on to the older ones?"

On Android 12 and newer, your phone shows its own microphone indicator whenever an app is using the microphone. You can switch the wake word off on Home at any time and tap the mic instead.

a friend · WhatsApp · asks what time you're coming.

Ravi · SMS · says he'll call after lunch.

Priya · email · "Meeting time". Can you move it to 4?

Proto: Shall I go on to the older ones?

A reply with your final say.

Proto drafts a message and waits for your approval. Sending through another app needs an unlocked phone and Phone control; otherwise you tap Send yourself.

How this works
Behind the moment / Your approval

A reply with your final say.

Say what you want to send. "Tell a friend I'm coming at 8 on WhatsApp." "SMS Ravi I'll call you later." "Email Priya asking about the meeting time."

Pocketsay finds the contact in your phone's contacts. If two contacts match a name, it asks you to choose. It writes the message in your voice, shows the draft, reads it back, and waits. Not right? Say "cancel". Nothing is sent, and the cancelled draft is kept in your activity log.

Approve the draft by voice—for example, say "send"—or tap Send. Pocketsay opens the app with your text ready and taps Send for you. That needs your phone unlocked, and it needs Phone control (Android's accessibility service) switched on. If Phone control is off, the message still opens ready to send, and you tap Send yourself.

You choose what gets saved.

Selected chat text and enabled app notifications are stored encrypted on your phone. Missing notifications mean missing context. Switching off a chat stops future saving, not deletion of old data.

How this works
Chapter 3 · What it remembers

You choose what gets saved.

Pocketsay builds its memory from the notifications your phone shows. That is why it asks for notification access during setup.

You decide which chats and apps count. Only the ones you switch on are saved, in an encrypted database on your phone. Banking and payment apps start switched off. One-time codes and card numbers are masked before saving, and app notifications older than 30 days are cleared when the notification listener reconnects.

One consequence is worth knowing. Pocketsay learns what Android shows it. If a notification never arrives, Pocketsay never learns about that message. On a Xiaomi phone, App Lock can do this to WhatsApp, for example.

Phone tasks are beta.

A task you start can tap and type without approval at each step. Screen text goes to your provider. Watch each step; safeguards depend on labels and can miss actions. You complete purchases.

How this works
Chapter 4 · Phone tasks beta

It can work inside apps, with limits.

Say "Search iPhone 18 on Flipkart and tell me the price." Pocketsay opens the app, searches, reads the screen and tells you what it found. A Phone task card on Home shows each step and has a Stop button. Saying "Hey Proto" also stops it.

To decide each step, Pocketsay sends the text on the current screen to your model provider. It does not store that text.

Task safeguards are designed to stop before purchase and payment actions and avoid passwords, PINs, one-time codes and card details. They use screen labels and may not cover every app or layout; review beta tasks as they run. Recognised financial apps are blocked. Tasks stop after 25 steps, or when you stop them. A started phone task can execute steps without individual approval; the reply-draft confirmation is a separate workflow.

Keep your pocket ready.

Health helps fix notification access, battery settings, the wake word and permissions. Autostart stays amber because Android cannot check it.

How this works
Keeping it alive

Why there is a Health page.

Pocketsay was built after learning what Xiaomi's HyperOS does to background apps. So it has a Health page. It checks notification access, battery and autostart, permissions, the wake word and the last capture, and puts a Fix button beside anything that needs attention.

Autostart always shows amber, because Android can't check it. You do it once.

Three everyday examples
Three small moments

What a day with it looks like.

Illustrative. The names are made up.

Hands full.

You're cooking and the phone is across the counter. "Hey Proto, what did I miss?" Proto reads the newest five. You carry on stirring.

On a walk.

The phone stays in your pocket. You ask what's new and hear the answer. To reply, you take the phone out and unlock it.

At your desk.

"Email Priya asking about the meeting time." Proto drafts it, reads it back and waits. You say "send". Pocketsay opens Gmail and taps Send, and the activity log keeps a record.

None of this is meant for driving or riding. Please keep your eyes on the road.

Clear choices. Visible limits.

  • Drafted replies wait for your approval by voice or a tap.
  • Purchases and payments are yours to complete; beta tasks are designed to stop beforehand.
  • Screen-label checks help avoid sensitive fields. Review each beta task.
  • Recognised banking, UPI, wallet and broker apps are blocked from tasks.
  • You can stop a task; it also stops after 25 steps.

Yes. Asking works with the screen off, but sending needs the phone unlocked. Pocketsay opens the app and taps Send for you, after you approve the draft by voice or tap Send. More in the FAQ.

Your chats stay on the phone, encrypted. When you ask, saved message context goes to Groq or Google Gemini with your own key. During a phone task, the current screen's text goes too. More in the FAQ.

It uses accessibility and SMS features that Google Play restricts, so you install the app file yourself. A lighter, Play-safe edition is planned. More in the FAQ.
