Download Pocketsay

Version 0.3.0 is in early testing. It's a signed app file (APK) for Android 10 or newer, installed by hand because it isn't on Google Play yet.

Your device

Pocketsay is an Android app. Download it on a phone running Android 10 or newer.

Not on Google Play yet

You install it from this page. Here's why.

Your browser may warn

It may say this type of file can harm your device. That message appears for every APK. Keep the file only if you downloaded it from this page.

On mobile data

The download is about 20 MB.

Built for arm64 (64-bit ARM) phones

Nearly every phone sold since about 2018 is one. If Android says the app isn't compatible with your device, this is the likely reason.

Read this first

Android may block the install

Some phones, including many in India, apply a Google Play Protect rule: an app that asks for notification access or accessibility access can't be installed from a web browser, a messaging app or a file manager. Pocketsay asks for both. You may see App blocked to protect you, with no way to continue.

This is a rule about permissions, not a verdict on Pocketsay. It applies to any app that asks for them. You can see exactly what Pocketsay asks for, and why, on the privacy page.

Two ways forward. You can install from a computer over USB, which isn't one of those sources. The steps are below. Or you can email us and we'll help you through it. We won't ask you to switch Play Protect off.

What you need

  • A phone running Android 10 or newer, on an arm64 processor. We've tested on one phone, a Poco F4 with Android 14 and HyperOS, so treat others as unproven and tell us what happens.
  • About 10 minutes. Setup is eight short steps.
  • An API key from Groq (console.groq.com) or Google Gemini (aistudio.google.com). Free keys work. You paste it into Pocketsay's Settings, and it never passes through this site. Before you pick a provider, read what each does with your data: a free Gemini key is treated differently from a paid one.
  • A little room. About 20 MB for the download, plus space to install it.

Install it in five steps

Android will ask you to confirm a few things. That is normal for an app that doesn't come from Google Play, and none of the steps is difficult. Menu names vary a little between phones.

  1. 1

Download the file on your phone.

Tap Download APK. If your browser asks, choose Download or Keep.

  2. 2

    Open it.

Tap the download notification, or open Files, then Downloads, and tap the Pocketsay file.

  3. 3

    Allow installs from this source.

Android may say your phone isn't allowed to install unknown apps from this source. Tap Settings, then switch on Allow from this source. This is Android's "Install unknown apps" setting. It applies only to the app you opened the file from, such as Chrome or Files. Go back and carry on.

  4. 4

If Google Play Protect speaks up.

Play Protect may offer to scan Pocketsay, or may say it hasn't seen the app before. That is normal for an app that doesn't come from Google Play. If it offers to scan, that's your choice. If you've checked the file (below) and you're comfortable, choose More details, then Install anyway. If you'd rather not, choose Cancel. Nothing has been installed.

If Android says App blocked to protect you and gives you no way to continue, see Android may block the install and use the USB route.

  5. 5

    Open Pocketsay.

Tap Open. Then follow the setup guide. The Health page walks you through each permission.

After you've installed it

Switch Install unknown apps off again for your browser or Files app. Pocketsay keeps working. You'll need it on again to install the next version.

Tested an earlier build?

Pocketsay 0.3.0 has a new app ID, so it installs as a new app. Your permissions, API key and chat choices don't carry over, and an earlier test build stays on your phone until you remove it. Uninstall the old one first: two copies would both answer to "Hey Proto".

Install from a computer over USB

This route doesn't go through a browser, a messaging app or a file manager, so Android's block doesn't apply. You need a computer, a USB cable and the app file. Check the file's checksum first.

  1. Get adb. Download Android's platform-tools from Google (developer.android.com/tools/releases/platform-tools) and unzip them on your computer. Copy pocketsay-0.3.0.apk into the same folder.
  2. Switch on Developer options. On your phone, open Settings, then About phone, and tap the build number seven times. On Xiaomi phones, tap the OS version instead.
  3. Switch on USB debugging. Open Settings, then Developer options, and turn on USB debugging. On Xiaomi phones you may also need to turn on Install via USB.
  4. Connect the phone. Plug it into the computer. When it asks whether to allow USB debugging, tap Allow.
  5. Install the file. On the computer, open a terminal in the platform-tools folder and run the command below. When it prints Success, Pocketsay is installed.
  6. Tidy up. Switch USB debugging off again if you like. Then follow the setup guide.
Terminal, in the platform-tools folder
adb install pocketsay-0.3.0.apk

Check the file before you install it

You don't have to, but it takes a minute and we'd encourage it. There are two checks. The first tells you the file you downloaded is the one published here. The second tells you who signed it.

What the checks prove, and what they don't

They prove your copy is identical to ours, and that it was signed with the key we use for every Pocketsay release. They don't prove the app is harmless. For that, read what it asks for, and why, on the privacy page, and decide for yourself.

THE VERIFICATION DESK

Your copy. The same fingerprint.

Choose the APK you downloaded. This browser checks its SHA-256 against this release. Your file stays on your device.

Local check. No upload. A matching hash verifies the copy, not the app’s safety.

Ready when you are.

Check 1. Compare the checksum

A checksum is a fingerprint of a file. Change one byte and the fingerprint changes. The fingerprint (SHA-256) of this file is:

SHA-256 · pocketsay-0.3.0.apk
355db853cdb48ab3633c49904bc53ca4b4ebbfdbb350f88c0d7a85b172277518

Work out the fingerprint of your copy and compare the two. Upper and lower case don't matter.

Commands
# Windows (PowerShell)
Get-FileHash .\pocketsay-0.3.0.apk -Algorithm SHA256

# macOS
shasum -a 256 pocketsay-0.3.0.apk

# Linux
sha256sum pocketsay-0.3.0.apk

# Easier, if you also downloaded the checksum file (prints "pocketsay-0.3.0.apk: OK")
sha256sum -c pocketsay-0.3.0.apk.sha256

On your phone. Some file manager apps show a SHA-256 under Properties or Details. If yours doesn't, check on a computer.

Check 2. Check who signed it (optional, for the technical)

Every Pocketsay release is signed with the same certificate, issued to CN=Pocketsay, O=Bhanu Avadutha, C=IN. Its SHA-256 fingerprint is:

Signing certificate · SHA-256
62:BC:74:3F:80:1F:35:46:BB:7E:1A:6F:D6:63:ED:C8:EC:78:BE:3B:35:E3:46:66:88:FB:B1:29:91:9B:8A:F9

If you have the Android SDK build tools, run apksigner verify --print-certs pocketsay-0.3.0.apk and look for "Signer #1 certificate SHA-256 digest". It prints the same fingerprint in lowercase with no colons: 62bc743f801f3546bb7e1a6fd663edc8ec78be3b35e3466688fbb129919b8af9.

The fingerprint stays the same from version to version. If a future file shows a different one, don't install it, and tell us.

If the numbers don't match

Don't install the file. Delete it and download it again from this page. If it still doesn't match, email avaduthabhanuprakash1@gmail.com with what you see. Please download Pocketsay only from pocketflow.bhanuavadutha.in. A copy hosted anywhere else is not one we can vouch for.

If the install doesn't work

"App blocked to protect you." This is Google Play Protect. See Android may block the install, then use the USB route or email us.

"App scan recommended." Android is offering to scan Pocketsay. Scanning is your choice. If you've checked the file and you're comfortable, choose More details, then Install anyway.

"App not installed." Check you have enough free storage, then download the file again and compare its checksum.

"App not compatible with your device." The app file is built for arm64 phones. Nearly every phone sold since about 2018 is one, but yours may not be. Tell us the model and we'll note it.

I can't open the file. Open it from Files, then Downloads, instead of from the browser.

The Install button is greyed out. Work or school profiles, and some parental controls, block unknown apps. Try a personal profile or another phone.

Xiaomi's installer asks me to wait. On Xiaomi phones the system installer may run its own security scan first. Let it finish, then tap Install.

adb says INSTALL_FAILED_USER_RESTRICTED. On a Xiaomi phone, switch on Install via USB in Developer options and try again.

adb isn't found. On Windows, open the terminal in the platform-tools folder and run .\adb install pocketsay-0.3.0.apk.

What happens after you install

  1. Open Pocketsay. The Health page lists what still needs setting up, and puts a Fix button beside each item.
  2. Work through the guide. Eight steps, about 10 minutes.
  3. Say "Hey Proto, what did I miss?" Pocketsay learns from notifications as they arrive, so on day one it knows only what has come in since you switched it on.
  4. Tell us what surprised you or broke. A person reads every message.

How new versions arrive

Each new version is listed in the changelog with its own checksum. Download the new file and install it over the old one, the same way. Because every release is signed with the same certificate, Android treats it as an update and keeps the app's data. Early testers also get an email when a new version is out.

Only the current version is linked from this page. Older checksums stay in the changelog, so you can verify a copy you already have.

What we collect when you download

Nothing beyond what's in the privacy policy. In plain words:

  • To download: no account, no email address, no form. The file comes from this site.
  • Counting: a first-party counter records page loads and APK download-button clicks, with the page or version, referring site, screen-size class and country. File-download starts are counted separately. The homepage publishes cumulative page views and button clicks, not unique people or completed installs. The counter stores no IP address, cookie or visitor identifier and honours Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track.
  • Cookies and trackers: none. This site sets no cookies and loads nothing from third parties.
  • If you join the early testers: the email address you give us, and any optional answers you choose to add (phone model, Android version, one sentence). For the planned deployment, Vercel will host this site and Supabase will store these details, used only to send tester updates and to reply to you. Emails will continue through Resend. Deployment configuration is pending verification.
  • The app itself is separate. What it stores and what it sends are on the privacy and security page.
